Open Day Prizegiving
25 October 2000
Scanners and PC's were the order of the day at the Faculty of Information Technology's open day prizegiving ceremony last Friday.
Leading Solutions donated five scanners, which were awarded to Mark Bernard, Rebekah Hobson, Manav Kurana, Nathan Van Zyl and Rebecca Tan. The major prize, a PC provided by Paragon Systems was won by Marcus Rigby. Faculty Manager Ken Hobbs hosted the event and representatives from Leading Solutions Sandra Notari and Penny Karakouti from Paragon Systems presented the prizes.
The competition consisted of various multiple-choice questions about the Faculty and the schools within the Faculty. The entrants also had this to say in a section requestion twenty five words about why they would like to study at the Information Technology Faculty:
"Because it is known world wide and has a very good reputation of offering excellent and rewarding courses." - Mark Bernard.
"Because Monash is the best at providing students with the knowledge and skills that are practical and therefore widely accepted and sought after by employers." - Rebekah Hobson.
"To build the foundations of a long career in the Information Technology industry by gaining a degree from an Internatiaonally respected Institution." - Marcus Rigby.
Prizewinnder Mark Bernard who is currently studying a Bachelor of Multimedia at Berwick campus said he was extremely happy to win a scanner.
"It will be so useful for my course, I know I'll use it a lot. I'm pretty happy," says Mark.
Another winner, Nathan Van Zyl, is a Year 12 student at Bellerine secondary school. He said that he uses his PC at home whenever he has any spare time.
"I am looking forward to having a scanner as I'll be able to use it for heaps of things," said Nathan.
Marcus Rigby is thinking about studying a Monash Information Technology course next year in either computer science or digital systems.
"I'm so stoked I won the PC, it couldn't have come along at a better time. I have one at home but it's pretty old so I definitely need to upgrade," says Marcus.
Each of the prizewinners agreed that university open days are extremely beneficial as they assist in course selection by providing an opportunity to ask questions about courses.
"They're a great way to find out more about a course which means you can make a better decision about whether the course is suited to your needs," says Mark.
