Surfs up for Monash IT Summer School
15 Jan 2002
Over 60 of Victoria's brightest students who have just completed Year 10 will attend the Monash IT Summer School from 13 - 18 January 2002 sponsored by Paragon Systems.
The Monash IT Summer School is designed to stimulate interest in information technology and demonstrate that information technology is an exciting and challenging field that is very important to the future economic development of Victoria.
Students are selected on academic merit from a wide cross section of schools across Victoria. Summer School organisers strive to attain a gender balance and an equitable representation of students from rural or regional areas of the state as both groups have a traditionally low representation in IT courses.
Monash University recognises the importance of achieving the broadest demographic participation in IT. Angela Carbone, the Academic Director of the IT Summer School said that, "As the summer school is a five day programme, it is possible for students from remote and regional areas of the state to attend. It also gives them an opportunity to visit companies and see first-hand applications of the latest developments in information technology."
The intensive programme involves hands-on project work like creating an online jukebox, seminars conducted by leaders in IT and also provides the opportunity for students to get a taste of university life.
Monash is Australia's largest higher education IT teaching and research institution and accounts for approximately 32% of all Victorian higher education enrolments in IT disciplines.
The 2002 IT Summer School will be launched by the Honourable John Brumby, Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development. The opening dinner will be held at 6pm on 14 January in the West Wing Banquet room of the Campus Centre, Clayton.
