FIT developed karate system exhibited at Commonwealth Games event

On Friday 17th of March the Faculty participated in the Monash Commonwealth Games Exhibition at QV Square, demonstrating the newly developed ‘Karate Action Replay System’. Designed and created by Monash IT Graduate Joseph Foreman, the ‘Karate Action Replay System’ uses computer and video technology to record and display live action karate bouts to assist in the scoring of karate tournaments.

The system was demonstrated to onlookers at QV by Australia’s Open Weight Karate Champion Leon Romary (representing Australia in the Commonwealth Karate Championships), 65kg Australian and Oceanic Champion Riste Mladenovski, and Victorian junior champions Jake and Dillion Selanetri. The National Judge from the Australian Karate Federation, Sensei Chris Diamond, refereed at the tournaments throughout the day, and we also had a guest performance from our own Fudoshin black-belt Richard Lewis (FIT Online Services Manager).

The interactive exhibition of the system was well received by the lunchtime crowd, and following the exhibition, Joseph Foreman was interviewed by The Age newspaper. A write-up of the event and this emerging technology will feature in the weekly IT column of The Age on April 1st.
