Don't overlook the obvious: Graduates 'sms' in job l3tt3rs
A recent article in The Age warns university graduates about the perils of popular culture. That is, many graduates are using SMS language in their written job applications and cover letters. Generally, employers are concerned by the change in language in graduate applications as it demonstrates poor grammar and makes a mockery of the tertiary education. Many interesting points are raised in this article.
To counter these issues that industry report, the Faculty of Information Technology provides many learning opportunities for students in order to prepare them for employment. For example, the Faculty hosts two events per year where Employment and Career Development Unit (from Monash University) conduct sessions about preparing to enter the work force. The session includes items such as how to write a cover letter, how to write your resume, interview techniques and a variety of tips that are useful through this transition process.
Coupled with this job ready workshop is an IT Employers expo where five prominent employers visit the University and discuss how their organisations and how they recruit IT graduates. Read about our 2007 events. The Faculty will run two similar events in 2008, with the dates to be confirmed. Watch our website for details.
