MSA Student Chosen for Google Student Ambassador Program

Jean-Paul Hounkanrin

A research masters (Master of Philosophy) student in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash South Africa has been chosen as the Google Student Ambassador for Monash University.

Jean-Paul Hounkanrin (right), who is from Benin in West Africa, has been an outstanding student in the faculty during his studies and his achievements have been recognised with this selection, for which he has been personally congratulated by Professor Ron Weber, Dean, Faculty of Information Technology.

The Google Student Ambassador Program is an exciting new opportunity open to high-achieving technical students at selected universities in Africa and the Middle East.

Student Ambassadors are the voice of Google on university campuses and work with Google engineers to plan and implement university events on campus, which promote information technology, engage the student body and facilitate unique learning opportunities.

One student per university is chosen to serve for the duration of the academic year, after which they receive an official certificate in recognition of their achievements and contributions in this role. While the responsibilities associated with this position are a considerable time commitment, they are also a fun way to learn more about Google and give back to the university community.

The selection team noted that Jean-Paul’s application was impressive because it reflected his creativity, leadership skills and dedication to excellence. "The essay submitted showed a strong knowledge of our company and culture, the ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions."

As Student Ambassador, Jean-Paul now joins an international group of high-achieving computer science and engineering students with a passion for education and the ability to get things done. He will act as a technical resource amongst his fellow students and as a university liaison for Google.  Students who participate in this programme become part of a network of students dedicated to improving knowledge transfer between industry and academia.

Jean-Paul says, "I believe being a Google Student Ambassador at Monash  University is a great opportunity and I have no doubt great things  will happen in this regard  between the university's IT students  community / faculties and Google."

Staff of the Faculty of Information Technology congratulate Jean-Paul on his selection and we look forward to hearing about the fun events being organised in conjunction with Google throughout the coming year.
