The Casual Robotics Group

On the 25th of March the Casual Robotics Group from Clayton's School of Information Technology hosted 12 Year 8 students and their teacher Mr Kevin Feely through a day of LEGO® robotics. The 13 visitors from Korumburra Secondary College's Advanced Science class were here to be shown how to build and program robots made from LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT kits.

LEGO® robotics

The robots shown were built from LEGO® pieces which included a programmable block that can drive several motors and receive input from a variety of sensors. The students were shown how each robot can react to sensory input such as touch, light, sound and distance. This form of robotics allows for fast prototyping and the ability to create a wide variety of robots with different functions. The robots can perform a variety of tasks from catapulting objects, navigating complex mazes, and acting like a 'wild animal' searching for food.

In the afternoon the students were taken to visit the High-Throughput Crystallography Lab where Prof James Whisstock (Dept Biochemistry) gave the students a guided tour around his lab and its surroundings.
