Monash-Lule partnership wins a STINT Institutional Grant

Wireless routers

Luleå University of Technology (LTU) researchers from Sweden, in partnership with Dr Asad Khan at the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) from Monash University have been awarded the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher education (STINT) grant. The funding is for research in bio-inspired computing and novel approaches for networks of tiny wireless sensor devices. The grant will enable research collaboration amongst academics at LTU, Monash University, University of Zurich (Switzerland) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (Malaysia). It will also fund masters' level scholarships and staff travel costs. The submission was ranked 5th out of 87 and scored 2nd in its pool – the technology group.

Bio-inspired computing research entails software and hardware developments that match the intelligence and skills of biological systems. Making information technology applications more powerful, robust, energy-efficient and finding new uses. Development of a new generation of low-power, low-cost and more potent wireless sensor technology, will be a key component in the development of infrastructure, industry and society in the now emerging computing era called "The Internet of Things"; including technologies for energy harvesting and energy-efficient communication. Networks of tiny devices comprise wireless sensor networks (WSN) and the radio frequency identification chips (RFID). The combination of these areas forms the theme of intelligent networks, with wide ranging applications.

The grant establishes a collaborative research framework among Dr Asad Khan (FIT), Dr. Fredrik Sandin (LTU), Professor Jerker Delsing (LTU), Professor Yi-Bing Cheng (Faculty of Engineering, Monash University), Dr Jakob Hohwy (Faculty of Arts, Monash University), Dr Elisabetta Chicca (University of Zurich), Dr Anang Amin (PETRONAS University), Mr Amir Basirat (FIT), and Mr Blerim Emruli (LTU).
