Biography:

Ian Martin graduated from Melbourne University in 1964 with a Commerce degree in accounting and economics. He started his working life at Mobil Oil Australia in Melbourne as a trainee computer programmer in 1965 and subsequently spent 31 years in the oil industry holding many different positions, locally and overseas, in information (business) systems, finance, accounting and business management. Based in Melbourne Mobil assignments took him and his family to Hong Kong, Sydney, Greece and USA.

Career highlights included 2 years as finance director of Mobil Oil Hellas in Greece and 8 years as manager information systems of Mobil Oil Australia. Systems responsibilities incorporated systems strategy development, new applications, application support, data administration, telecommunications (voice and data), office automation and computer operations. During this time the marketing and refining business of Esso Australia and the mainframe processing of Mobil Oil New Zealand were absorbed into his information systems portfolio.

In the 1990's Ian participated in major business interventions, radically restructuring and reegineering the Mobil organisation in Australia. Finally he was finance director of Mobil Oil Australia for 4 years prior to joining the School of Business Systems in 1999.

Ian lectures in Business Case Development at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, and leads the Business Systems industry-based learning program.
