Biography:

John Betts graduated from Monash University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in music and mathematics. He has subsequently obtained postgraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics and operations research at The University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. John joined the school in 1995 initially undertaking research in multi-agent trading systems. He is Chief Examiner in Quantitative Methods for Business Systems and Computer Models for Business Decisions. He also lectures on the processing of still images and video for multimedia applications as part of the Multimedia for Business Systems unit.

John's PhD analyses the benefits arising from Just-In-Time (JIT) replenishment for certain components or the reduction of component commonality by the use of over-specification alternatives for components used in assemble-to-order manufacture. This work is motivated by an analysis of the operational performance of small, capital-constrained, manufacturing companies, taking into account their rate of return and their risk of business failure. The thesis challenges the traditionally-held view that setup cost reduction is an essential condition for JIT replenishment to be cost-effective. The research has shown that it is possible to justify the use of JIT replenishment for certain components, even at increased setup costs due to the benefits that arise from the elimination of JIT components from inventory. The work has led to several decision models which show how to identify suitable components for JIT replenishment based on a company's chosen level of investment in inventory.

In addition to working closely with a number of companies on operational issues, John also consults to business on mathematical and statistical problems, such as the development of algorithms for incorporation into software, data analysis and the presentation of business statistics. He is a member of The Operational Research Society, INFORMS and the Statistical Society of Australia. His work is published in a number of referred journals, including the Journal of the Operational Society and Management Science.
