Multimedia stream
What is multimedia?
Multimedia is one of the most innovative and fast-growing areas of information technology and design, providing real career opportunities. It combines different media - images, film, sound, words and animation - into an interactive package that presents information in a variety of forms, and allows people to use it in a way that suits them best.
Multimedia systems include websites, information booths, educational software, games and advertising services.

Multimedia at Monash University
Monash offers two undergraduate degrees, Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (Multimedia applications major) and Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (Multimedia games development major), a postgraduate degree and research qualifications in multimedia. Many of our current PhD students are undertaking their research doctoral theses in multimedia areas.
All courses are accredited with the Australian Computer Society.
Multimedia gives you a broad understanding of the diverse disciplines involved in developing multimedia systems. You’ll learn about digital and interactive systems and the important links between technology and presentation skills. Jay Boston - multimedia applications double degree
Jay Boston completed his IT double degree (Bachelor of Multimedia Applications and Bachelor of Communications) in 2006. He was attracted to the range of design opportunities and the scope of projects. “I chose this course to work on the distinction between design and psychology and to find out how the use of learnt behaviours of communication can be heightened through design,” he says. “The IT and communications faculties at Monash were impressive and provided the specific skills I wanted to attain. The student-to-computer ratio was excellent and the hardware was up-to-date.”
Since graduating from Monash University, Jay has established his own boutique creative new media agency which specialises in simplistic, user-driven creative web solutions. “Our clients include Qantas, Visy, Stride Sports, Belgravia Leisure, Konika and Vicious Threads; and we pride ourselves on understanding their needs and creating an end solution that exceeds their requirements.”
Jay found the flexibility of the IT course a benefit for students who don’t know which direction to specialise. “The first year enables you to understand exactly which area of Multimedia you wish to pursue. Everything is thrown at you - so you need to catch the topics, software, challenges and projects that interest you. By the end of that first year I knew what I wanted to do and I went with it 100%.”
“The course delivered its objectives through well-thought out tasks, group work and real-world situations,” said Jay.

Jessica Cerejo - multimedia systems degree
Jessica Cerejo was unsure at first about the field in which she wanted to work. She decided on Monash to study a broad degree in multimedia combined with a business/enterprise major. “This degree allowed flexibility and variety. I loved how I could study digital design and art, programming, project management and business all in the same course. I knew that if I took this approach I would have the opportunity to try for any job due to Monash’s reputation in the graduate job industry. Monash also has a great community and culture feel, and I liked how I could take units at different campuses and their overseas affiliates.”
An attractive feature of all Monash’s undergraduate IT courses is that the students can take their own direction with their projects. “In studio units we could produce anything from a film, music, digital art, gaming programs, complex programs, applications and websites. The sky really is the limit.” says Jessica. “In the final year we had the opportunity to showcase our projects to the public and industry at Federation Square. These industrial based studio projects taught us how to carefully analyse and innovate business multimedia solutions to real clients. I learned how to identify the requirements of the client, develop abstract ideas and solutions, and work in teams using business skills.”
“Most importantly, the tutors and lecturers were always there to support you with their open door policy. They got just as excited as we did about the projects we were undertaking, even staying back in their own time just to help us. They have passion in what they do, are always keen to help, and make time for students to achieve their best. I still keep in contact with my tutors and lecturers at Monash.”
