Graduate Diploma in Business Systems (GradDipBusSys)

Projects

The aim of Business Systems projects is to facilitate Masters by coursework students who wish to specialise in a business systems area such as commercial, financial and health systems. Projects allow students to have the opportunity to carry out a thorough investigation in the area of information and business systems. The investigation is done under supervision and provides a chance for students to examine an area either not previously covered in other subjects, or to build upon their knowledge of topics in those units which are offered.

Business Systems Project units are:

BUS5580 Business Systems project 1
BUS5590 Business Systems project 2
BUS5500 Business Systems project 3
BUS5510 Business Systems project 4

Amongst other possibilities, a project can include:

  1. The design, development, prototyping and testing of a significant piece of software. This should lead to a written evaluation of the feasibility and future of the software.
  2. An in-depth exploration and report on a leading edge piece of information technology.
  3. A literature review which investigates and leads to a range of carefully stated research questions in the topic area, and a research method for approaching them.
  4. A single or multiple-case study in industry of real-life business problems. The aim would be to analyse and assist in the solution of the problems using business systems tools.

Project Assessment

The type of assessment will depend upon the project type. However at the beginning of the project the project deliverables must be specified. The student and the supervisor will together determine the deliverables. Possible deliverables include:

  • A working software prototype, its plan and supporting test, design and user documentation
  • An extensive report of the results of the investigation and possibly an oral presentation

A written report as the sole deliverable for a 6 point project would be approximately 5000 words (excluding appendices) in length.

In order to enrol in project units, students must have:

Completed one of the following:

  • BUS9520 - Business systems A; or
BUS9001 - Business technology and asset management and
BUS9002 - Business technology and information management; or
    Units equivalent to those above
  • Completed 24 points of graduate level units with an average of distinction (70%) or above.
  • Been accepted by an appropriate supervisor and submitted a signed Supervisor's Agreement Form (available from room G19, building 63)
  • Completed or be enrolled in BUS5000/9000 Research Methods

It is the student's responsibility to find an appropriate supervisor and research topic by the end of the first 2 weeks in semester. Lists of supervisors and topic suggestions for each semester are available from the General Office.
