Degree information:

Bachelor of Multimedia Systems (BMS)

Course structure

To qualify for the degree students are required to meet the following conditions:

  • Complete no more than 60 points at first year level
  • Complete no less than 36 points at second year level
  • Complete no less than 36 points at third year level
  • The remaining 12 points can be electives at second or third year level, as long as a total of 144 points is achieved

All Multimedia Systems (MMS) units have a value of 6 points, as do the majority of Monash units, however some faculties offer units that have a point value of greater or less than 6. Students should carefully check the point value of any units they enrol in.

Units designated as ArtDes in the following are run by the School of Art and Design. Units designated as BusEco are run by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

The Bachelor of Multimedia Systems may only be awarded with a single tag. If a student completes sufficient units to qualify for more than one tag, they must select which tag the award is to be made under.

All students must complete eleven common core units:

  • MMS1001 Technical and Professional Communication
  • MMS1402 Creating Digital Content
  • MMS1403 Developing Multimedia Systems
  • VCM1001 Visual Communication ArtDes
  • MMS1401 Studio 1
  • MMS3402 Entertainment and Interactive Technologies
  • MMS3407 Studio Project 3A
  • MMS3408 Studio Project 3B

All students must complete nine units of study selected from the BMS majors (it is not required that these units be selected from the same major).

All students must complete four units of electives (refer to Electives below).

Important Notes

  • All units are 6 points
  • To complete the course students must gain 144 points of credit; within this, students must not accrue more than 60 points of first year level credit (level 1 units)
  • Students must complete a minimum of 36 points of second level study and a minimum of 36 points of third level study. For enterprise major students this means that they must complete at least one elective at second level and all majors must complete at least one elective at third level
  • All students, other than those studying under the programming major, must select at least one third level elective, within their 36 points of third level study, from the level 3 IT area. This is necessary in order to meet Australian Computer Society accreditation guidelines
