Investigate and Evaluate Commercially Available Sensor Devices for Location-aware Infrastructure

Supervisors: A/Prof. Arkady Zaslavsky & Prof. Phillip Steele

Pervasive computing research investigates the technical and social challenges of creating computerised environments that will recede into the background of our everyday lives and empower us to be more effective in all of the activities that we undertake. The Faculty has recently established the CoolCampus project in an effort to better connect its research activities in pervasive computing and to generate more opportunities for its researchers to collaborate and engage with industry and government partners through the development of research demonstrators. Coolcampus researchers were also awarded the FIT Research grant for building collaborative pervasive computing infrastructure.

One of the aims of the Monash CoolCampus project is to provide smart places and location aware infrastructure and information services that will empower Monash students and staff as they go about their day to day activities.  This will be achieved through the integration of web services, wireless networks, handheld computers, context-aware mobile agents and sensor networks to support and develop pervasive information services. There are possible connections between Coolcampus and other projects like SmartBuilding (DSTC).

The aim of this Summer Studentship is to identify, analyse and evaluate commercially available location aware infrastructure that may be deployed as part of the Monash CoolCampus initiative.  A major report of the findings is to be published on the CoolCampus website.  The investigation is to cover a range of technologies for in-building and outdoor position location including Global Positioning System, Cell-phone triangulation, Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, ultrasonic, infrared and RF badges.

  • Project location: Caulfield
  • Duration: 10 weeks starting early December
  • Skills: wireless devices, digital systems, interest and experience in hardware design, networking, device drivers and OS internals

Results can be accessed here.

A list of universities/institutions that have implemented location aware systems can be found here.
