4. Flexible study options

Students structure their studies to suit their lifestyle: on-campus or off-campus (distance learning), full-time or part-time.

On-campus study

Students can attend lectures and classes on a particular campus. Some units are offered across campuses giving students the flexibility to choose the most convenient campus to attend. Each campus provides its own library(ies), computer labs and other student facilities. For information about on-campus accommodation please visit the Monash Residential Services website.

Off-campus learning (OCL)

All courses offered by the Gippsland School of Information Technology are available to students for part-time study by off-campus learning. These courses are structured so that it is possible to complete all requirements without attending any campus. The Masters of Information Management and Systems (at the Caulfield campus) is also available by off-campus learning (as are some units within other degrees offered by the faculty). Each off-campus unit has the same content and assessment, and is of the same duration as the equivalent on-campus unit. Study materials and class discussions are provided online, and more emphasis is placed on self-directed study.

You can view our list of courses available in off-campus mode. For more information about OCL please visit Monash's page on Studying off-campus.

Off-campus learning (OCL) with a Monash partner

Students can study a Monash IT degree by off-campus learning with the Gippsland School of Information Technology with additional support provided by offshore partners located in Hong Kong and Singapore. These education partners offer a wide range of educational services and support. Students can complete their entire Monash degree at a preferred education partner or choose to complete some of their degree at the Gippsland School of Information Technology as on-campus students. For more information please visit our Study with a Monash partner page.

Full-time and part-time study

Most undergraduate and postgraduate courses can be undertaken by full-time or part-time study, or a combination of both. A full-time load usually means studying four units per semester (or eight units per year), while part-time means studying one or two units per semester. The Monash Glossary in the Undergraduate Handbook provides further explanation of the full-time and part-time modes.

Evening classes

Part-time evening classes (scheduled between 6:00pm and 10:00pm) are available for most courses offered at the Caulfield campus. At the Berwick, Clayton and Gippsland campuses, classes are only available during the day.

Mid-year intake

All courses can be commenced mid-year (semester 2).

Summer semester

The study year comprises two semesters: March to June and July to October. Some units may also be offered during an extra summer semester. Students may be able to use the summer semester to accelerate their studies, or to catch up missed or incomplete units. For information about the current year's summer semester units and how to enrol please visit the Summer Semester, Trimester 3 and Term 4 page.

Studying abroad

The Monash Abroad program offers students the opportunity to study one or two semesters overseas, providing guaranteed credit towards their degree. Students can choose their destination from more than 120 partner institutions around the world.
