Monash University boasts the highest ranked IT school in Australia. Our research is recognised and lauded both nationally and internationally. Monash is one of only two Australian Universities to have won the prestigious best Australian PhD dissertation in computer science more than once. A postgraduate research degree from Monash is your gateway to the world.
Research at Monash Faculty of Information Technology is characterised by four broad strengths:
- Pervasive computing – enabling individuals to accomplish personal and professional transactions with intelligent and portable devices
- Intelligent computing – bringing intelligence, reasoning, perception, information gathering and analysis to computer systems
- Multimedia computing – presenting information in a variety of forms allowing information and presentations to be customised into formats that best suit individual needs
- Social computing – focusing on the information and knowledge needs of people and how these can be met across time and place with the aid of appropriate information technologies
Research highlights include:
- Monash researchers developed BlueJ, the world's most advanced software package for teaching java programming.
- A team from the (former) School of Information Management and Systems is developing a web portal that offers information tailored to the individual needs of breast cancer patients. By developing complex user profiles, the portal is able to know if a particular resource is relevant to the user.
