This session will expose doctoral students to the 'mysteries' of thesis examination procedures and give practical advice on how to prepare a thesis for submission. In the light of their own experiences in this area, speakers will also offer some observations on the expectations of examiners.

This workshop presented by the Learning Skills Unit examines the tricky business of expressing your own voice while integrating the words and ideas of others into your thesis. We will discuss ways of incorporating references into your writing and highlight strategies for articulating your argument effectively in all disciplines.

This workshop will present the basic principles of creating a conference poster, including software, layout, balance and content. It will present previous examples of posters and evaluate them in order to show what to do and what not to do. Finally, strategies for attracting and maintaining attention will be outlined

IBM India Internship program - 2009

IBM will again be offering their IBM internships for 2009 in the IBM India Research Laboratory. No actual dates are available yet but will be soon.  The information below is still relevant for the 2009 intake. The program is the same as last year.

Internships at Microsoft Research USA

Microsoft's Health Solutions Group -Mr. Prabhdeep Singh (Technical Transfer Manager)
have some intern openings in the Medical Media Lab, and would like to extend this
opportunity to PhD/Masters students in the Faculty of Information
Technology.  The research areas of their labs are listed here:

Monash Residential Services Higher Degree Research Merit Scholarships

One of Monash Residential Services’ (MRS) mission goals is to provide and develop an environment within each location on campus which provides care, support and enrichment for the residential community in academic, cultural, personal, social and recreational matters.

The Monash Residential Services Higher Degree Research Merit Scholarships are provided to further the above divisional mission goal and to promote and engender a high academic environment at all Victorian on-campus residential sites.

No more than ten Monash Residential Services Higher Degree Research Merit Scholarships will be awarded annually to current residents studying at the following Monash faculties and Centres:  

Normally only one award will be made to any single faculty.

Administration and selection

The scholarship will be administered by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS):

Applications close:             30 November 2008.

Ranked applications will be received by  MRGS who will consult with MRS and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training) to determine the scholarship recipients.

• Offers must be formally accepted by students
• Payments (rental rebates) will be processed by MRS.

IBM PhD Fellowship program

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards is an intensely competitive program which honors exceptional Ph.D. students in many academic disciplines and areas of study.

Students must be nominated by a faculty member. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head.

Application form will not be available until 22 September 2008.

Monash Access Equity Postgraduate Research Travel Grant

As part of the equity program, special travel grants are available for 2008, each up to a value of $3000 (depending upon destination and associated costs) for travel within Australia and overseas.  Only Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for these grants.

Postgraduate Travel Grant

Postgraduate travel grants assist students who wish to attend conferences in order to present a paper or poster on their current research.

Students undertaking postgraduate research programs at Monash are strongly encouraged to present their research findings at national and international conferences.  This allows them to expose their work to peer review and to develop networks that will be important in their subsequent research careers.

Postgraduate travel grants are also available for students:

• To undertake field trips, surveys, data collection or interviews;
• To learn new techniques
• To pursue research in specialist archive collections;  or
• To utilise specialist equipment not available at Monash University

The Jean Gilmore, Thenie Baddams and Daphne Elliott Bursaries are open to women enrolled at Australian universities, to assist with research towards a PhD or Masters by Research. – up to $6,000.

Postgraduate Publications Award

Closing date: 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December each year

The Postgraduate Publications Award is open to postgraduate research students who have submitted or are about to submit their thesis. The scheme provides support for students who wish to prepare some of their research for publication while they wait for their examination results.

ICIS 2008 Conference
The ICIS 2008 Conference Committee and the Association for Information Systems are pleased to invite scholars to participate in the Twenty-Ninth annual International Conference on Information Systems
(ICIS 2008) to be held in Paris, France, December 14-17, 2008.

The ICIS 2008 Program Committee invites submissions across 18 tracks, including our Theme track of "Ethics, Design and Consequences."  At ICIS 2008, we will confront the ways in which we are creating informational environments with IT, and the consequences they have for organizations and for society. We will ask: are we really doing what we want, what we are worthy of, and what do we desire for society? Are we creating betterment for human beings? Our intention is to challenge global academic and industrial leaders to confront the ethical basis, the design processes and the consequences of IT as we create a worldwide ubiquitous presence of information and communication technologies.

Please note the following:
1. The conference website at www.icis2008.org contains the track descriptions, deadlines, and submission guidelines.

2. The deadline for submissions is May 6^th (midnight, Pacific Standard Time). This is a firm deadline and no extensions will be allowed.

3. All submissions must be made through the online submission system http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/icis2008.  Authors need to create an account on the submission system (see tab in the upper right corner) before they can upload their papers. A submission can be made to only one Track and the posted submission guidelines, at http://www.unice.fr/icis2008/step1/submissions.html, must be followed.

4.  Acceptance/rejection decisions will be made on July 31, 2008.

Online Forum for Postgraduates

“Postgrad to Postgrad” is a new online forum set up by the MPA.  Aside from the “lounge” (for general discussion), the main areas are set up by discipline with the idea of postgrads being able to talk to each other about their work, postdoc opportunities, info on overseas units etc.
