Application process

Applicants applying at the Faculty of Information Technology for a research degree, either a PhD or Master's can investigate a topic of their own choice OR take up the challenge of a project / topic identified by Monash.

To apply the following steps must be followed:

1. Check your eligibility

If you are interested in undertaking either a PhD or Master's degree, you need to find out if you are eligible to apply. Potential applicants need to check the eligibility requirements for the course and/or scholarship. 2. Find a supervisor and research area

A Faculty of Information Technology research degree can be completed in any field of research where sufficient expertise and resources are available. Applicants need to investigate the many research options and identify potential supervisors within the faculty. 3. Submit an Expression of Interest

Once you have identified a supervisor in the research area of your choice, complete the Expression of Interest Form and submit the form directly to

Please note the submission of the Expression of Interest does not constitute a formal application for a Research Degree.

For scholarship applicants the closing dates for Monash Postgraduate Scholarship applications are 31st May (mid-year round) and 31st October (end-of-year round) each year. It is strongly advised that you lodge the Expression of Interest no later than 30th April and 30th September for the scholarship rounds.

4. Obtain an Invitation to Apply

After receipt of the Expression of Interest an assessment is undertaken based on the information provided. Where you are assessed as suitable to apply for admission to the proposed research degree, and appropriate supervision and facilities are available for your research project you will be issued with an invitation to apply.

NOTE: you are required to upload a copy of the invitation to apply with your formal application however it does not guarantee your application will be successful. It enables your application to be considered for admission to our research degree program based on the information provided.

We aim to provide you with an invitation to apply or a response to your expression of interest within four weeks of its receipt.

5. Lodge an application

After you have received an invitation to apply you can then proceed to lodge an application.
There are three application options:

  • Research degree and scholarship
  • Research degree only
  • Scholarship only

6. What happens next?

Once your have lodged your application and expression of interest your application will be reviewed and you will be notified via email of the outcome. Please allow 4-6 weeks for your application to be processed.
