Aims:

The main objectives of this research project are:

  1. to achieve a model for Intelligent Decision Support through the integration of elements from the Knowledge Discovery in Databases process and Intelligent Hybrid Systems;
  2. to integrate the required computational elements and technologies in a single computational model;
  3. the application and evaluation of the proposed model in a specific decision problem;
  4. to verify the generalization and applicability of this proposed model.

Methodology:

This research project is concerned with the design and development of a computer-based model for decision support based on knowledge discovery in database (KDD) technology. The project proposes an extended architecture for the traditional KDD process. Within the proposed architecture some additional elements are considered: besides data mining technology, an intelligent decision support system, a case base, a rule base and a communication component to perform the integration among those elements. The research areas of this project are classified in two perspectives: a technological perspective and a problem-oriented perspective. The problem-oriented perspective is concerned with the application domain issues. One of the first steps in this project is to characterize the suitable decision making problems. A decision problem of the aviation weather forecasting is being studied as the application case for this research project, in collaboration with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The technological perspective is concerned with the proposed set of technologies, there integration and system architecture and design.

The following computer technologies under consideration in this research project are:

  • Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD)
  • Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS)
  • Intelligent Hybrid-Systems
  • Agents and Mobile Technology
  • Knowledge Management in Distributed Enterprise Systems.
