"During High School, I was always interested in web development and graphic design, however upon finishing year 12 I was unsure of my preferred direction in the IT field. My undergraduate degree allowed me to experience a broad range of computing subjects with the availability to narrow down into more specific disciplines as the course progressed and interests were formed.
"During my undergraduate degree, I was given the opportunity to be included in a number of IT research projects. My involvement ranged from occasionally participating in another student's experiment, to acting as a formal research assistant for a piece of privately funded research. One particularly interesting project revolved around the evaluation of Virtual Reality devices and associated software as educational tools.
"I enrolled in the Master of Information Technology (Minor thesis) to expand on my now avid interest in web usability. This postgraduate course allowed me to fine-tune my subject choices for half of the degree and through the guidance of a senior lecturer with similar interests, I pursued a unique research topic for the remaining time. My thesis presented a number of different approaches to managing web usability on mobile computing devices.
"While completing the final stages of my thesis, I was offered an IT development position at the NAB (National Australia Bank). This began my career as a Web Developer, progressing to a Content Designer and Intranet Project Manager within the Web Applications division. I have found the experience to be both rewarding and enjoyable; working with cutting-edge technologies such as the NAB usability lab and putting all of the university theory into practice for corporate clients.
"Outside of the corporate environment I freelance as a New Media developer. This allows me to further pursue my interests in web design and usability, while keeping me up to date with the ever-expanding Internet technologies and frameworks.
"One of my experiences so far that has been brought about by Monash is that a successful IT project will facilitate an element of peer review which is guided by the broad range of skills found within a team. The most important skill I learned during all my time studying did not come from any one particular subject and has been integrated into all aspects of my working life, it is how to successfully work in a project team while managing the unpredictable and often confronting factor of 'team dynamics'."
* The Bachelor of Information Management and Systems is the previous form of the Bachelor Information Technology and Systems with a major in Information management, Information systems, or Systems development .
