New Media Director
                                                    Intense Design

Jay Boston completed his IT double degree (Bachelor of Multimedia Applications and Bachelor of Communications) in 2006.  He was attracted to the range of design opportunities and the scope of projects. “I chose this course to work on the distinction between design and psychology and to find out how the use of learnt behaviours of communication can be heightened through design,” he says. “The IT and communications faculties at Monash were impressive and provided the specific skills I wanted to attain. The student-to-computer ratio was excellent and the hardware was up-to-date.”

Since graduating from Monash University, Jay has established his own boutique creative new media agency which specialises in simplistic, user-driven creative web solutions. “Our clients include Qantas, Visy, Stride Sports, Belgravia Leisure, Konika and Vicious Threads; and we pride ourselves on understanding their needs and creating an end solution that exceeds their requirements.”

Jay found the flexibility of the IT course a benefit for students who don’t know which direction to specialise. “The first year enables you to understand exactly which area of Multimedia you wish to pursue. Everything is thrown at you – so you need to catch the topics, software, challenges and projects that interest you.  By the end of that first year I knew what I wanted to do and I went with it 100%.”

“The course delivered its objectives through well-thought out tasks, group work and real-world situations,” said Jay.

“The projects took on a team focussed approach where students were given the basic skills and it was up to the team to learn the software available, stretch the limits of it and create a product that fulfilled the scope of the project. Although daunting at first, specialised staff were on hand to answer any questions and this process meant we needed to work efficiently to meet deadlines.”

Jay believes learning to work in a team environment is a major benefit for students aiming for careers in the IT and creative world. “I still chat, collaborate and work with my closest friends from Monash. The team work environment might not be for everyone but you need to learn that it is the most effective way of working,” he says.

Describing his time at university as a challenging and rewarding education experience, Jay advises, “If you come to Monash, get ready for an education specific to your needs, tailored to you and a rewarding journey about yourself. As one of the most recognised educational institutions in the world, you cannot go wrong with Monash!”

* This degree contains the previous form of the  Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (with a major in Multimedia Applications); or a Bachelor of Communication/Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems.
