Shane Hawke

Bachelor of Business Systems (IBL stream) (2006) *

Shane Hawke
Shane Hawke
Graduate Programmer
National Australia Bank

Shane Hawke advises that choosing to study his Business Systems* degree was probably the best decision he has ever made.  One of the more valuable aspects of the degree was not just studying information technology, but the fact that the course is geared towards the demands of the industry.  This focus means that students are trained to fit the requirements of major organisations, which in turn means a greater chance of employment.

The degree achieves a great deal of this business focus by structuring, as a part of the course, two separate six-month Industry-Based Learning (IBL) placements, combined with business related subjects such as project management and business communications.  The end result is that graduates are not only equipped with IT knowledge, but the skills and business acumen to successfully apply them.

It was these aspects of the degree that helped distinguish Shane from the rest of the applicants when it came to applying for graduate positions.  Shane had IBL placements at ADP Employer Services and National Australia Bank (NAB), and he accepted a graduate position at the bank.  He also received a graduate offer from IBM and was continuing with the graduate recruitment process with several other companies, when he decided to accept the offer from NAB.

Shane has just completed a two-day future leaders program with the bank, which he says was extremely valuable and will be very useful as he progresses into leadership positions within the bank.  He strongly believes his performance on placement assisted him in being accepted into the bank’s graduate program.

“The Business Systems* course also offers many rewards all of which I believe help to distinguish you from other IT graduates.  These rewards range from scholarships to recognition of high academic achievement.  If you apply yourself to the Business Systems degree and strive to do your best, there is literally no IT/Business career that you cannot pursue.  The options are unlimited!”

* The Bachelor of Business Systems is the previous form of the  Bachelor of Business Information Systems .
