Staff/Student Meeting - Clayton Campus

Staff/Student meeting for the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering was held on 13 October 2004 in the Seminar Room, Clayton Campus.

Welcome
The meeting was chaired by Associate Head of School, AssocProf Trevor Dix who opened the meeting and called for Action Items from the Previous Meeting and Reports by year level.

HONOURS -

Action items from previous meeting -
Guidelines for supervisor - supervisors were reminded.
After hours access to upstairs kitchen - access has been authorised.
Redesign of CSE417 - a meeting was held to discuss and outcomes will be taken on board in 2005.
Redesign of internet pages - Students were asked to send suggestions.
Obeying rules CSE417 - Bernd Meyer advised that marks will be deducted for serious breaches.


Honours Report -

Honours students are happy that the computers have been updated. They will be checking that the relevant software has been installed.

Any complaints about loud music from the Cafe should be directed firstly to the Manager and then Elaine Zelcer, Executive Director of the STRIP.

FOURTH YEAR -

Action items from last meeting -

Access to East Entrance of Building 26. - Security has changed the programming to allow students who have access to south entrance to also have access to east entrance after hours.

Telephone in new MUSE lab - the extension will not be reinstated as there is an emergency phone in the corridor to comply with safety requirements and that phones are not provided in other labs.

Toilets in building 19 - cleaners have been notified.

Fourth Year BSE Report -

Students congratulated Sita Ramakrishnan and thanked her for being helpful in discussing their future etc.

CSE3316 Database Management Systems - students were happy with the way this unit was being taught this year.

It was suggested that the lecturer of BUS2176 be invited to the CSSE Student/Staff Meetings as this unit is core in the BSE degree. ACTION: Karen Fenwick

THIRD YEAR -

Action items from previous meeting -

Details about the Graduation web page have been posted on the third year noticeboard.

Third Year Report -

CSE3322 Programming Languages and Implementation - reps received no complaints about this unit (everything is good) and reported that the lecturing is superb. They asked about precise exam information as they are not sure what will be in the exam. Lecturers advised that this will be dealt with in the revision week and in the news.

CSE3323 Computer Industry - Students reported that this unit is fantastic and the lecturer gives solid lectures. However they would have liked the results from assignment 1 before assignment 2 was due and definitely before the exam. Students advised that sample papers have been provided. ACTION: Ronald Pose

Double degree students have concerns about the relevance of CSE3308 Software Engineering: Analysis and Design to their course. AssocProf Trevor Dix advised that this comment would be taken on board. 

SECOND YEAR -

Second year report -

CSE2305 Object-oriented Software Engineering - A discussion took place about value for effort. Comments by the students were noted.

CSE2302 Operating Systems. The hurdle requirements were discussed.

CSE2325/CSE3325 Multimedia Programming and WWW - Students asked about the possibility of fortnightly labs in this unit. The lecturer advised that consultation time although widely advertised, is not fully utilised. AssocProf Trevor Dix advised that to operate within the budget the school is not able to provide labs and tutorials for every unit.

CSE2305 Object Oriented Software Engineering - There were complaints about a particular marker. The lecturer advised that all complaints have been investigated and work remarked.

 

FIRST YEAR -

Action items from last meeting -

CSE1303 solutions to tutorials have been posted on the web.

 

AssocProf Trevor Dix thanked everyone for their attendance and closed the meeting at 1.45 pm.

The next Student/Staff Meeting will be held in semester 1 2005.
