FIT5120 Industry experience studio project - Semester 1, 2015

The industry experience project capstone unit gives students the opportunity to research contemporary approaches to system development and develop new skills, as well as applying the knowledge and skills they have already gained, in the delivery and development of an IT solution to industry standards designed for use by business clients. During this process students are expected to reflect on these concepts and theories in order to analyse why they are necessary for a successful outcome. The students work in self managed teams Throughout this process students will need to communicate effectively (interpreting and evaluating what effective communication means) to a range of stakeholders. This includes analysing and synthesising information gained, as well as producing and presenting outputs to professional industry standards. Students will present, in relevant and innovative ways, findings to academics and peers as well as project based stakeholders and industry experts. The students attend unit seminars, carry out research individually and contribute in a professional, committed and collegial manner to the work of their team and to their studio peers.

It is highly recommended that students enrol in FIT5122 Professional practice in conjunction with FIT5120. FIT5122 Professional practice has been designed specifically so that students will benefit from this unit whilst taking FIT5120.

Workload Requirements

Minimum total expected workload equals 24 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • Two 1-hour seminar
  • Two 3-hour studio laboratories

(b.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • a minimum of 16 hours independent study per week for completing project work individually and with team members, client meetings and review work.

Learning Outcomes

On successfully completing this unit, students should be able to:
  • critically analyse complex information and identify information requirements interpreting how they may be of benefit to an organisation or a community;
  • analyse how IT applications are developed and evaluate the underlying principles and reasons underpinning each aspect of the development process;
  • differentiate and synthesise the interrelated roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders (e.g. clients, system users, management, developers, external stakeholders, external providers) of a project and assess and analyse why these roles are important for a successful project;
  • apply, in an industry standard setting, new concepts as well as aspects of theoretical approaches already learned, selecting the most appropriate fit for a specific situation and the rationale for that selection;
  • assess the need for a methodological approach to deliver an IT application and be able to conduct all activities associated with the appropriate development methodology;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of effective communication in order to disseminate knowledge and ideas to both specialist and generalist audiences. explaining why these principles are important when interacting with all stakeholders;
  • demonstrate discernment and judgment in the relevant application of the process and requirements of presenting information to senior executives in organisations, including innovative, relevant and meaningful ways for presenting that information, adapting approaches where necessary;
  • contrast and apply the most suitable IT and professional practice skills to operate effectively as a member of a development team;
  • reflect and communicate on personal and team progress throughout the unit.

Teaching Approach

Work-integrated learning or industry-based learning
In this unit we simulate a real systems development experience.Groups of students work as a team with support and mentoring from both academic staff and senior industry clients to develop a working and innovative system to industry standards.

The unit involves seminars, studios and workshops, and research activities. Learning is encouraged through enquiry based and peer assisted approaches, student presentations and experiential learning. Reflection, through portfolios, is used to conceptualise, document and understand the experience and to develop understanding of personal strengths.

    Title:
    Practical Assessment - Project deliverables
    Description:
    A range of system development deliverables related to the project - details to be specified, and negotiated in the early stages of the development process.

    Detailed information about assessment, deliverables and due dates will be provided via the Moodle website.
    Weighting:
    70%
    Criteria for assessment:

    How well the project meets the agreed system requirements (Industry mentor and studio supervisor), how well the process of development is carried out, the management of that process and the professionalism of the team.

    The supervisor will monitor individual contributions by individual team members through observation, meetings and interviews. Professional practice and particpation will also be taken into account. This assessment will also include peer assesment of self and team members across a range of critera, for each deliverable.

    An individual team member’s final mark for the 'Project Deliverables' can vary based on these individual criteria across the semester. This variation can be plus/minus up to 100% of the group mark for the 'Project Deliverables'

  • Assessment task 2
    Title:
    Individual EPortfolio
    Description:
    The Portfolio gives students the opportunity to document their experience and their project, and reflect upon, analyse, and learn from their experiences. The students will constructively review their practices, with a view to improving future practice.  This is an individual assignment.
    Weighting:
    15%
    Criteria for assessment:

    Reflection of learning experience including description, evaluation, analysis of their learning experiences, together with strategies to solve any similar issues that might arise in the future. Examples will be give on the Moodle website.

    Weekly, dates documented on the Moodle website.
  • Assessment task 3
    Title:
    Final Presentation of Project
    Description:
    This is a team assignment with items taken from the students' individual portfolios to create a 10 minute presentation that will describe the team's final project: the reasoning behind it, its viability for industry and an overview of how it was developed. The presentation will also include the students' learning journey and progress throughout the development. 
    Weighting:
    15%
    Criteria for assessment:

    Presentations will be assessed on content across a range of criteria (available on Moodle), process of development and medium used to present (novel ways will be encouraged). An example of a succesful video presentation of a project will be available on Moodle as an example.

    The supervisor will monitor individual contributions by individual team members through observation, meetings and interviews. Professional practice and particpation will also be taken into account. This assessment will also include peer assesment of self and team members.

    An individual team member’s final mark for the 'Final Presenation' can vary based on these individual criteria.

The studio environment provides a large array of software and hardware for students to use within the studios. Anything additional is to be negotiated between the student teams and their supervisors. FIT will not normally provide additional hardware or software.
